Thank you to everyone who attended a clinic in 2009 - Please follow this LINK and provide us with some feed back on the the clinic you attended.

OK Provinciials are fast approaching, so it's
Rule Refresher Time:

Stick Checks:
- Can only be called by the HEAD COACH. Identify him/her when you ask for Capitan’s.
- Can only be requested during a dead ball.
- Stick has to be on the field of play.
- Stop the clocks. “Stop all clocks, My Time! Stop all clocks”
- Tell the player that you want his stick and not to ‘touch it’ – “Red 17 I want your stick, Don’t touch the head!”
- Should he manipulate the stick – Immediate 3 min Personal Foul. You will still carry out the entire Measurement. If he was the shooter, his goal is now disallowed.
- Should he run off the field and you can still identify him and his stick without any doubt you will still carry out the measurement
- Should he run into the bench – no measurement – you can’t identify the stick.
- Get the stick and the ball head to center with your partner.
- Use the tape measure that you have in your pocket at all times. Cheap dollar store Tape Measure, literally $1 (+ PST and GST) and a Sharpie. I have two – one marked for Field and one marked for Box.
- Do not handle the head of the stick, do not mess with the strings, do not tap it on the ground etc ... just hold it out there.
- Measure the entire thing. Overall length, head length head width. (measurements can be found in the rule book, look ‘em up) We DO allow Peewees to use a box length short stick or 36 inch min length.
- Look for a cap on the end of the shaft. Tape is sufficient so long as it covers the entire but such that there is no ‘hole’ or sharp edges
- Look at the strings hanging off the head (the mesh is NOT a string) they ALL must be less that 2 inches long from the edge of the plastic to the end of the string.
- PLACE (do not pound, drive bounce the head etc ... just put it in there) the ball in the pocket and check the depth. Can you see daylight between the top of the ball and the base of the Head? If Yes, then ILLEGAL the pocket is too deep.
- Tip the stick straight over past vertical see if the ball falls out freely. Do this ONCE and ONLY ONCE. It either falls out or it doesnt, no best two out of three, just ONCE!
- If the stick is illegal throw a flag and assess the foul . If there was a goal scored but THIS player and you have not yet restarted the play after that goal then the goal does not count.

Equipment Checks:
- Ask the Coach when you co for Captains “Are all your players legally equipped to play today?”
- Simply ask the player to come to you.
- Shoulder pads - tap his shoulder you will feel them.
- Mouth Guard ask him to smile- you will see it.
- Cup --- you are on your own with that one.
- Gloves - show me your palms - the FINGERS must be encased within the glove. The PALMS may be cut out.
- Cleats - let me see your cleats - no metal cleats, caps, spikes etc...
- Helmet/mask – just look at it.

Take the time tonight and read your rule book again:
Focus on:
Rule 15 The Crosse, and Rule 16 Prohibitions Relating to the Crosse.
Rule 17 Personal Equipment, and Rule 18 Prohibitions Relating to Personal Equipment

Remember the difference between Dangerous Equipment and Illegal Equipment

For Enforcement of the 4 above rules read:
Rule 63 Illegal Crosse. And Rule 64 Illegal Equipment.
And Rule 75 Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

Look at this -- is has finally happened

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Entire Macdonald Family has done a game together.

Yup; last Sunday (Sept 13th) All 5 of them worked a CUFLA Exhibition game together.
Joe, Neil, and Norm out on the field, Graham in the Box as C.B.O. and Archie as the Bench Manager.
What a sight.
It even attracted the attention of the Brantford Expositor and low and behold

The Family made the Paper.
And I quote.......

Circumstances and a few game organizers conspired to make history happen on the Lacrosse field this weekend.
One referee was brought in from Ottawa, and another made the trip from Peterborough to create the perfect storm of refereeing Macdonalds - five members of the same family refereeing the same game.
It was probably the first and the last time that a game would be refereed by four siblings and their father, all from the Brantford Macdonald clan.
The Macdonalds learned how to play lacrosse here after moving to the city in 1988.
Refereeing patriarch Archie started officiating games 19 years ago as a way of keeping n eye on his teenaged boys. He's coached minor lacrosse for years winning six provincial gold medals.
The boys moved through the ranks both in Brantford and for their Universies: Trent, Laurier, and Carleton.
And the Eldest Norm ended up as a member of the New Zealand national team that competed in the last Asia South Pacific games in 2007. He also held the first referee clinic in New Zealand and coached there for the past three years.
"We all enjoyed it and all of us got into it" says Norm 30.
To say the least.
They've played at just about every level there is and refereed all over the map.
All the brothers are just as passionate about the game.
Norm's twin Joe helped supervise the first Peewee nationals, little brother Neil 28, helped coach the Korean national team in 2005 and 2006. Graham 22, refereed the Bantam national championships this year.
And on Sunday all that passion came together at a tournament at McMaster University.
"Normally you might have five refs at an international game but not at a university game." says Norm. "but they wanted to make it happen and it's not that often I get a chance to referee with my brothers now."

End quote.

That's It the minor season is over for another year. Thanks to everyone who dedicated thier weekends to the kids and the game.
Hope that you all had fun and if you have any suggestions for improvement please forward them on to us.

High School has a couple of weeks left before we all head indoors. Get in touch with the assignors if you are available weekday afternoons.

The numbers are in and the Men's Field Lacrosse Referee's Association have come through again.

This past weekend during the 1st Annual Jammer Classic to benefit The Children's Wish our referees donated their time and expertise to the tune of $1,372.00

This great effort will be 'matched' by the OLRA for an additional $500.00 bringing the total money raised for the charity to $1,872.00

Thank You to everyone for their generosity.

The 1st Annual Jammer Classic Field Lacrosse Tournament is complete and what a success.

There were three days of great Lacrosse played in a beautiful new park on Cherry Beach in the Toronto Portlands.
Fridays events were centered on a High School Round Robin that saw some great competition between the local Birchmount, St. Mikes, Malvern, and St. Andrews. The day finished with a game between the Hill Academy (Jamisons school) and an All Star team made up from the other 4 schools. The Hill Academy came out on top, and then the committee decided that we were not done yet. They held a Brave Heart to decide the outcome, I have never heard of this, but Ill tell you, was it ever fun to watch. 2 Players and one ball, first goal wins, what a show, the All Stars pulled it out of the fire and took home the title!

Saturdays 10 team Midget event was a great time. There is something about a friendly that just makes the game feel that little bit different. The kids were sure enjoying themselves talking with the people from the NLL Play Lacrosse program, and the new Toronto MLL franchise (both major tournament sponsors) and playing the game just for the fun of it. There was even a womens game played mid day featuring the Toronto Stars club.

All the official ceremonies were held on Saturday at noon. There were representatives there from both the City of Toronto and the Childrens Wish Foundation. With a crowd of more than 400 looking on The City of Toronto dedicated the field we were using to Jameson Kuhlmann and expressed its wish that all players young and old who use the facility be touched by the spirit of this young man.
Mark Kuhlmann spoke and thanked the endless list of corporations who stepped up to sponsor this event and the countless volunteers who made it all come together. He was truly overwhelmed with the support that they received. Originally Mark and his committee were prepared to finish this weekend and just simply break even, but that is not what happened. Shortly after Mark Kuhlmann finished, Linda Blogg presented the big cheque to the Childrens Wish Foundation for $11,500.00, the reaction on the representatives face was absolute surprise and shock, she was truly grateful, and its hard to imagine that a charity would be at a loss for words when accepting donations. But believe me, it happened.
The best part is there is another cheque to be written, because the 11,500 does NOT include any of the money raised from on site donations, T-shirt, food, coffee etc sales on the weekend and it also does not include the Referee donations which will be a rather nice number. John Dixon has not totaled it all up yet, but OFLOA will be asking the OLRA for its entire $500 commitment.

There was no shortage of media involvement either. On Friday the local paper was out, Saturday we saw the Toronto Star, on Sunday for the final we had City-TV filming highlights, and if Im right Mad Dog from the Mad Dog and Billy show was working the DJ booth on Saturday and Sunday as well. Even the local community couldnt ignore the excitement, joggers stopping for a rest, cyclists, dog walkers, families watching many of whom also dropped a few dollars into the jug.

Sunday was just as good as the two days before. The weather although windy was still perfect about 10 degrees and sunny (I have the burn to prove it) as it had been every day. All 10 teams made the playoffs and in single elimination Peterborough and the Beaches (Jamiesons teammates) played off in the final. In the end after a close hard fought game the Lakers came out as the winners of the 1st Annual Classic.

All said and done it was an awesome event, well organized and executed flawlessly. Highlights for me, meeting Frank and Peter from Beaches Lacrosse, two people I have heard about so often now I know why, laughing with Linda and the volunteers, John Dixon has told me all about Mark and his family and now that I have met them I can see why John has so much respect for them, seeing the OLA VP Officiating out at yet another event, hearing that the OLA made a very generous donation, watching our referees give their time and knowing that the OFLOA/OLRA donation will be bigger because of their generosity!

Best of all, we were home in time for Easter Dinner.
